The trout fishing on the Pm has been good lately with lots of bug activity on warm days and a good streamer bit on cold and cloudy days. Don’t forget about the alevin and fry patterns at this time of the year. There are gobs of salmon fry in the river now and the freshly hatched steelhead will be popping out soon.

Fish the alevin and fry patterns downstream around cover and drops or behind a larger streamer on a sink-tip. Watch as your favorite trout streamer is out fished 10 to 1 by the fry trailing a foot or two behind.

Pere Marquette Lake and other area river mouths have shown good fishing for pike and other species like walleye, carp, drum and plan on getting into quite a few smallmouth as well, though remember that they are still out of season. When around the river mouths and piers you always have an exciting chance at a salmon, steelhead or lake run brown.

Sorry for the delay on reports for the PM but our crew has been down finishing up the steelhead season on the Muskegon. I did get out for a beautiful day of trout fishing last week and my guys got my first trout of the season on a dry. Small black stones, several caddis species along with some mayflies were coming off last week and they had the trout active.

Dries aside, the bulk of our trout action has been on fry patterns… the PM has lots of salmon fry around and the trout are on to them.

There are spawning steelhead here and there but the drop-back hens have been making our days. Look for the drop-backs anywhere from gravel pockets to the deep and dark holes. The bug action seems well ahead of schedule but that is probably expected with this very warm spring.
