PM guide report for October 4th, 2009.
Water Conditions — Temps in the 50’s, average color and level.
Fishing Conditions — Lots of salmon in the entire river, with a good bite going in the lower river. What this means is that there are plenty of salmon still heading upstream and the fishing should be good well into the next week. Eggs in chartreuse with red and white with red have been producing along with the standard large naturals in the two to four inch range. Steelhead have already started showing up on the ends of our lines… this is a good indicator of a strong fall steelhead run.
Tips: Give the fish a break, change flies often and be stealthy… this is how you get salmon to bite. It amazes me that people robo-cast to a group of fish that are only ten feet away. If they didn’t hit your fly choices in the first dozen casts when you were fifty feet away they probably aren’t going to bite on the nine-hundredth cast when your now only ten feet away.
Barothy Lodge is located on a great section of the Pere Marquette River, between Branch and Walhalla and is a perfect place for your next fishing vacation.
